It is not only builders of new homes that can take advantage of environmentally friendly practices. The average householder can do lots of things to both save the environment and save the strain on his pocket. Certainly some things will cost, but in the long run they will save you money. And there are government rebates on several things so much of the initial cost can be recovered.

One example of this is the installation of solar panels for energy. The cost of this can be as much as $12,500, but an $8,000 rebate makes it sound a whole lot more feasible. And when you have extra it is added to the grid and will reduce your electricity costs again. Similar - but costing less - is the solar water heater and pump with gas top-up, which is up to 70% more efficient than the traditional electric one. Both need licensed electrician/plumber for installation.

Easy things you can do yourself are: - changing your top loading washer to a front loader to save water; insulating the ceiling - safe polyester batts and now available; installing a rainwater tank for indoor use, using drip irrigation instead of spraying and using native or drought-hardy plants. The latter will not only save water, but save on the cost of fertiliser and pesticides. You'll need a plumber for the tank.
